A star in his native Mexico, he rose to fame starring in Mexican films and telenovelas. He broke into the U. S. television market when he landed the plum role of Gina Rodriguez's father, hilarious overly dramatic telenovela superstar Rogelio de la Vega, on the critically acclaimed CW series  Jane the Virgin. Now Jaime Camil has a shot at becoming a cross-over Hollywood star. A classically-trained singer, who has performed in Broadway, the actor is making his debut as the lead in the Lionsgate/Pantelion Films romantic comedy Las Píldoras de mi Novio (My Boyfriend's Meds), in a role that he says he couldn't pass up. "I love the fact that it has all the elements that a good rom-com needs, a lot of physical comedy, that I love to do, but at the same time, the story taps into mental health conditions, " says Camil. In the movie, Camil plays Hank, a charming mattress store owner, who seems to be the perfect catch: handsome, seductive, attentive, understanding and, well, just perfect. He meets Jess (Sandra Echeverría) a tequila company's high-powered marketing executive, who has a hard time finding a match, and they hit it off. So much so, that she invites him to a company retreat in a tropical island. But what should have been an incredible romantic getaway doesn't go off as they imagined. Jaime Camil is out of control without his meds in a scene from "Las Píldoras de mi Novio. " It turns out Hank has a secret he didn't share with Jess. He suffers from a multitude of issues, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, tourette syndrome, for which he takes an endless assortment of medications that keeps all his ailments in check. The problem is, in an unexpected twist, his meds, which he carefully packed, fall out of his bag and don't arrive with him to the secluded island, which has no pharmacy! That paves the way for some funny and awkward situations, where Camil convincingly conveys his desperation. "I wanted Hank to have depth, not to be like an empty barrel. I wanted to show his suffering and true emotions when it came to his mental health conditions, and have the audience to connect with what he was feeling, " states Camil. "Comedy is a very powerful tool to touch sensitive subjects. I hope the movie helps a little bit in bringing awareness to these types of medical conditions. " Camil is also an executive producer on the film. "I'm always very involved when it comes to producing projects, but this is the first time I'm actually getting the official credit, " he laughs. "I love that part of the business - being behind the camera. " Sandra Echeverría is the film's co-star. The movie has a lot of Spanish-language dialogue, but there are subtitles in English, and the back and forth between both languages is seamless. "There’s a natural and organic transition between the languages. As immigrants, that's how we live our lives here in this country. You turn to your Latino friends and you speak Spanish to them and then you turn to your co-workers or your American friends, and you speak in English. That's why it's effortless. " The film has an eclectic cast, which includes some very recognizable faces, such as Brooke Shields (who co-starred with Camil on Jane The Virgin), Jason Alexander ( Seinfeld), Brian Baumgartner ( The Office) and telenovela star Juan Soler. Ana Belena, Daniel Tovar, Kevin Holt, James Maslow and Mónica Huarte round up the acting ensemble. Las Píldoras de mi Novio premieres in U. theaters February 21.
